We kick off our Spring Training rankings of fantasy catchers. There have been some changes since our 2012 rankings. Coming off his MVP season Buster Posey grabs the #1 spot. Last season Indians catcher Carlos Santana held onto the top spot. He comes in at #2 this year, with Chris being more bullish on Santana than Kyle and me.
We all just couldn’t agree about Royals backstop Salvador Perez. I have him as my #2 catcher and Chris has him all the way down at #10. In last years rankings Joe Mauer was the biggest disagreement, with a high of 3 and a low of 12. I was the 12. I bumped him up this year because he offers such elite batting average.
Victor Martinez is probably making his last appearance on a catcher rankings list as he’s slated to handle the DH duties with Alex Avila behind the plate. Avila didn’t make the list this year. Last year he was #8, and ahead of Yadier Molina.
The catcher position has gotten deep in the last few years. Buster Posey is elite, but after that, you can definitely wait until the end of the draft and still pick up a valuable catcher.
